KENILWORTH, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month this April, RDx BioScience (RDx) points to the value of specialized alcohol testing to stem the impact of alcohol abuse and its impact on lives, communities and workplaces. Founded and sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (now Facing Addiction with NCADD), Alcohol Awareness Month’s local affiliates, schools, colleges, religious organizations and numerous community organizations will sponsor a host of activities that create awareness and encourage individuals and families to get help for alcohol-related problems.
“Alcohol Awareness Month provides a focused opportunity across America to increase awareness and understanding of alcohol addiction, its causes, effective treatment and recovery,” says Scott Howell, D.O., MPH &TM, CPE, chief medical officer, RDx. “While opioid addiction has garnered a great deal of attention recently, we should not overlook the toll of alcohol abuse. It’s also important to decrease the stigma of alcoholism to remove barriers to treatment and recovery.”
He points out that individuals and employers in need of Department of Transportation-certified alcohol testing should seek a lab that offers specialized, cost-effective drug and alcohol screening.
More than 88,000 people die from alcohol-related deaths each year in the United States. Alcohol is one of the nation’s most preventable causes of death, second only to tobacco and a poor diet/sedentary lifestyle. One in every 12 adults, or 17.6 millionpeople, suffer from alcohol use disorder or alcohol dependence.
An integral part of Alcohol Awareness Month, Alcohol-Free Weekend, April 5-7, helps to raise public awareness about the use of alcohol and how it may be affecting individuals, families, businesses and communities.
“Alcohol addiction is a chronic, progressive disease, genetically predisposed and fatal if untreated,” says Dr. Howell. “RDx is committed to playing a role in helping individuals recover from drug and alcohol abuse by directing the delivery of patient care using our high-technology laboratory to provide full-service diagnostics and genomic testing supported by evidence-based research.”
