Industry Leader Tenet Diagnostics Supports Opioid Commission’s Initiative to Reverse
KENILWORTH, N.J.–As an industry leader, RDx BioScience, (RDx) providers of high-quality laboratory and genomic testing and evidence-based research designed to direct patient care for clinicians, employers and payers, announces today its support of the bipartisan President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. RDx has underwritten an educational grant to support a Mandatory Prescriber Education Course in New York state, and will replicate opportunities throughout the country.
“We applaud the commission’s interim report calling for President Donald Trump to mandate education surrounding opioid prescribing and the risks of patients developing a substance use disorder, as well as requiring all Drug Enforcement Administration registrants to take a course in the proper treatment of pain,” says Scott Howell, DO, MPH&TM, CPE, chief medical officer, RDx. “We believe the commission’s recommendations are an important step in what will be a long, much-needed push to empower physicians, improve prescribing practices and save lives in the battle against opioid abuse.”
In 2015, opioids accounted for more than two-thirds of all drug overdose deaths in the United States — 15.6 percent more than the previous year — and drug overdose deaths nearly tripled between 1999 and 2014. While policy changes and education programs have been initiated to educate prescribers, opioids remain a mainstay of pain management.
“We commend these bipartisan efforts to resolve the lack of opioid prescriber education in our nation’s medical schools,” Dr. Howell adds. “Only by working together, can policy makers, community leaders and the medical community end this crisis.”
